Let me tell you a story. A story of complete insanity, blessings and 1,800 miles.
Once we found out we would be moving to Cape Girardeau, the plan was to kind of finish out the summer and then move. Of course, I pushed that to the farthest place in my mind-the place where cobwebs and old boyfriends exist. I do not/did not want to leave Kansas City.
Let's get back to the story.
As time continued on, as it always does, the whole "we really are moving" thing came into the picture. I packed little by little. One Monday evening, a friend of ours called me, asked if I was home and if she could come see our place. 45 minutes later, we were moving June 21st and we had someone to buy our place. What the what.
I figured I would pack here and there between the jobs and be prepared with boxes packed and ready to move to Cape. Well between the 3 jobs and the not acknowledging of the move...time crept up pretty quickly and boom...time to move.
Monday morning we picked up our U-Haul and started the packing--let it be noted, it was horribly hot and humid. With the help of our lovely friends the truck was packed in an hour. With that, Seth drove the truck and I drove the car down to Cape...to find a place to live. Yes, you heard me right. We had all our earthly belongings stuffed in a truck..taking it 300 miles to a place we'd never been, with no home. We be crazy.
Took us about 6 hours to make it down to Cape. As I pulled in, it seemed similar to the layout and size of St. George...just a whole lot greener. We parked the truck and the search began. The frustrating thing about going to a new place, is not knowing which areas are safe/not safe...you know what I mean. We found a place with everything brand new, in a sketchy area and high-ish rent. We decided to sleep on it. Once we checked into our hotel, we were basically calling everyone in Cape trying to find a place to live. Through Super Woman, aka Emily, we got in touch with some church members in Cape. One member volunteered to drive me around Cape, showing me the areas to live and just the city itself. I was pleasantly surprised how I was kind of liking Cape.
Tuesday we got up good and early to begin the search. We spent all morning driving around looking for "FOR RENT" signs, calling them...and then not getting anything. At one point in the drive, I heard a clank and then the sound of something dragging. I pulled over and looked under the car--something was now hanging and a liquid was dripping rapidly from the car. At this point, I basically broke down. If this is where we were supposed to be, WHY IN THE WHY was it turning out to be so difficult?!?! I decided it was time to eat. Taking time out to eat and breath, usually makes my mind clear...So Quick trip to Honda--everything turned out fine. Quick trip to Panera and we were back on the road. Seth found a new posting in the classifieds, we called it and we went to check it out. This place was a duplex, in a quiet neighborhood, with a 1 car garage, with a backyard....things were looking up. The owner, who lives next door, is a lady in her late 60's and is quite the firecracker. The rent was reasonable and she'd accept j. lo as a tenant. We figured-this is gonna work. One tiny little problem...the current tenant was not out of the place. Long story in that, but basically we could not "officially" move in until like the beginning of July. Remember that part where we had everything we owned with us, we needed to move in ASAP and we'd be gone for a month? eesh....
We told firecracker about our situation and she decided she liked us so much that we could put everything we owned in her basement AND she'd keep it there for us RENT FREE. Um...AWE-some! So we called all the mormons we could to come over and move our stuff. More like we called our contact and she called all the mormons and they came! We had everything out of the moving truck and into storage in 1 hour. And with the awesome heat and humidity of Cape, there were a couple people with their clothes completely soaked through with sweat.....
We thanked our new friends and landlord and at that, drove back to Kansas City. We were exhausted but unfortunately on a schedule. We got back to K.C. around 11:30 that night and after a little "angry" surprise (more on that later) we crashed.
Wednesday morning we got up good and early to start the cleaning of our place, as well as try to help our neighbors pack up. The day was spent feverishly cleaning, in hopes of checking out that day, and visiting with friends on last time. It is so sad to know that these experiences will never happen again. Yes, I know that I will remain friends with these wonderful people (they have no choice in the matter) but the good experiences of just walking across the street and having such great people to talk to....anyways...
We finished cleaning right as our property manager knocked on our door. Which was very stressful and hectic--but thankfully, AGAIN, to neighbors, we had it all taken care of. After checking out, we spent the rest of the night with Emily and James, eating food and enjoying the last moments as neighbors. At midnight, we headed out for Utah...completely physically and emotionally(me) exhausted....
...........and we drove...................
......................................and then we hit a deer...........
...............and I'll stop there............
